Welcome Remarks
In 2001, a group of women lawyers discussed the negative aspects of the adversarial court system in Kenya. They agreed that a proactive approach whereby they empower people to seek amicable and constructive resolutions to their conflicts would save the family institution from collapse. Moreover, the ‘collective’ nature of the African social systems demands a collective approach to dispute settlement. Mediation and positive conflict resolution holds the promise of retaining the social cohesiveness and partnership necessary for peaceful co-existence and development.

The mandate of FAMEC has since expanded to embrace community peacebuilding and human rights education initiatives.

The organization has grown in leaps and bounds, and is now nationally recognized in its premier and leading role as a positive nonviolent
conflict resolution and peacebuilding institution.

The role of FAMEC in post conflict peace building, healing and reconciliation in the troubled Kenya of today is gainsaid. Our hands are full with the enormous task of reaching out to grassroots communities where peace has eluded them since the disputed presidential elections of December 2007. The human suffering and the cry for return to normalcy calls for innovative multifaceted and multi level approaches and strategies
With the much-needed contribution of the international community, local communities will be able to drive local peace initiatives towards attainment of peace and resumption of development. This will complement the national or macro level peace processes which address the larger policy frameworks but which would be meaningless if they did not translate to tangible gains at local levels where pain, suffering and destruction is most alive.

We welcome you to view some of our work which is has hitherto largely concentrated in the Northern Kenya. Our intention is to use our extensive experience and expand our successful peacebuilding, mediation and reconciliation programs to other Kenyan communities that have been afflicted by the violent conflict.
We hope that you will be spurred to support us in one way or another to help restore Kenya to its lost glory as the beacon of peace and democracy in Africa.
