Accomplishments
i) Training and Education
- A four year very successful pilot training course on Women’s Human and Legal Rights for 380 women leaders of the Maasai community under the theme “Bringing Women’s Rights Home”. Other project components included monitoring and follow-up and development of training manuals.
- An annual 40 hour mediation and conflict resolution certificate course so far trained 60 people who are practicing mediation. Annual refresher courses conducted. These are premier mediators in Kenya operating under the banner of Association of Kenyan Mediators and will participate in the pilot mediation scheme of the High court of Kenya from 2008.
- Kajiado Women Empowerment Organization (KWEO),a robust umbrella Community Based Organization formed as an outcome of our women rights and leadership training with a membership of over 1000 women human rights activists. They rely on us for technical advice and support. 28 of them will be attending an exchange program between FAMEC and University of Georgia, USA in 2008-2009.
- Civic education program for 50 women leaders from Northern Kenya who have replicated the education in the entire region with increased voter registration, reduced campaign violence and improved participation of women in the civil-political process.
- Trainers in human rights, gender, peace building and nonviolence for over 120 community leaders from Northern Kenya and several post training follow-ups. Peace committees in the region are now better equipped to offer widespread peace education for a culture of peaceful co existence and mainstreaming of the community in national affairs.
- Six-week introductory course in conflict transformation for 15 peace organizations to enhance personal and institutional peace initiatives for social change.
- Leadership training for 90 leaders of community based organizations and groups leading to better managed organizations and programs across the country.
ii) Seminars
- Since 2002, we have conducted numerous seminars in churches, schools and other organized groups on topical issues like women’s property rights, human rights, family law, succession and inheritance, mediation and conflict resolution etc.
- Since 2002, we annually commemorate four major UN International days by holding press briefs, seminars, marches ,campaigns following the themes:-
- The International Women’s Day (8th March)
- The International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament (24th May)
- The International Peace Day (21st September)
- The International Human Rights Day (10th December)
iii) Capacity Building and Networking
- Famec staff members have participated in numerous workshops, conferences, consultations etc both locally and internationally. These have given us opportunities to build our capacity, expand our networks and collaborations and heightened our cross-cultural experiences. We have been to countries like USA, Tanzania, Uganda, The Netherlands, Ghana, Thailand and Australia. The capacity building has been in areas such as Training of Trainers, human rights, good governance and democracy; gender mainstreaming, gender and development, conflict resolution, leadership and mediation.
- We collaborate and network with local like minded organizations like Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA- Kenya), Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArbs- Kenya Chapter), Coalition of Violation Against Women (COVAW), Law Society of Kenya, FEMNET, International Commission of Jurists (ICJ- Kenya), Association of Media Women of Kenya (AMWIK), All Africa Conference of Churches, Women’s Desk (AACC), WUPI (Women United Peace Initiative), Intermediate Technology Development Group – ITDG, COPA (Coalition for Peace in Africa), Peacenet, Peace Tree Network (PTN), Africa Peace Point, OIKO CREDIT, AMAR Safety Hands Women’s Group, Oltiyani Women Self Help Group, Kipetu Community Group etc
- We are members of several international organizations and networks including: - International Fellowship of Reconciliation – The Netherlands (IFOR), Pax Christi International- Belgium, Association of Women’s Rights in Development-USA, Women’s Human Rights Network-USA, Gender, Democracy and Governance Centre–USA, Association of Conflict Resolution (ACR) –USA and others.
iv) Resource and Documentation
- FAMEC has an expanding Resource and Information Centre with over one thousand books, journals, articles, reports, periodicals and DVDs on gender, human rights, women’s rights, peace, conflict transformation, development, empowerment and other related fields.
- We have offered internship opportunities to over 20 graduate women pursuing careers in law, social and community work, peace studies, gender and development who have moved on to contribute immensely to a sustained women’s movement.
